ANNOUNCEMENTS
SAD NEWS

We regret to inform the congregation that the daughter of Lynn Coleman and Ken Hamermesh, Tatanya Hamermesh-German, died this past week.  Tanya fought her cancer valiantly for 7 long years.  She touched so many people and lived such a full, productive life. Her kindness, her laugh, and her intellect will be missed by all.  There will be an event celebrating her life in Denver on February 29th, time and place to be determined.  Tanya's friends will soon identify meaningful charities for contributions.  We will notify the congregation as we get more information.  In an unspeakably sad twist of fate, Lynn's mom, Laura Lee Coleman, also passed away in Denver this past week.  The congregation offers deepest condolences to Lynn, Ken, Mona and Max.

TU B'SHEVAT

Please permit me to share some insights from Ellyn Hutt. It will be Tu b’Shevat on February 10. We are in redemption season. The months of Shevat (Tu b’Shevat), Adar (Purim) and Nissan (Passover) or the months of redemption. These holidays are exactly 4 weeks apart unless it is a leap year. They are all mid-month during a full moon. Tu b’Shevat is associated with Shabbat Shira, when the waters of the Sea of Reeds split, and the Israelites crossed over and were saved from the Egyptians. They sang in celebration of their miracle. For Tu b’Shevat we eat fruit. However, there are no trees, at least in the northern hemisphere, that bear fruit in February. Although the trees do start to bud in Israel, February is still deep in the winter for us. We look at the bud, and we know what the finished product will be. So, we celebrate the finished product before we’re sure if the fully formed fruit will really happen. We know that there are always miracles all around us. If we are very traditional, we say that this heralds the coming of the Messiah. If we are less traditional, we say that this brings us hope that life and its miracles will go on and we will be redeemed.

February 8 is the Shabbat closest to Tu b’Shevat. Please come to services, bring fruit and enjoy our season of redemption and miracles of the renewal of life.

SECURITY

I recently attended a meeting of the Safety and Security Network. We will be discussing ways of continually upgrading our security at the next board meeting. In view of the uptick in anti-Semitic activities and violence against Jews and Jewish institutions, we need to maintain vigilance. We will keep all of you appraised.

"SHIRU L'ADONAI":
Jewish Sacred Choral Music
Fri., Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. at St. Pauls' Community of Faith
Sun., Feb. 23, 3:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel

Shiru L’Adonai (“Sing to the Lord”) celebrates four centuries of Jewish sacred choral music, from the Renaissance’s Salamone Rossi of Venice, to Romantic-era Berlin Cantor Louis Lewandowski (a friend of Mendelssohn and colleague of Brahms), to 20th century additions, including a portion of the haunting but hopeful Sacred Service by Ernest Bloch, written in Switzerland in 1934 as he observed the clouds gathering over neighboring Germany.

February 21st, 7:30 PM: St. Paul's Community of Faith
February 23rd, 3:00 PM: Temple Emanuel

PARSHA BESHA-LACH
HIGHLIGHT: ISRAEL

It’s been many years that the city of Jerusalem has emerged from the descriptor “backwater.” Still, this note on open hours for one of the cafes in the main market may make you smile:  Always open. “Israelis like their coffee in a particular way. And because a good cup of java deserves a good pastry alongside, here are quality cafes combining great coffee, cool atmosphere and a delicious does of Jerusalem style.”
