PSALMS

We have been reading Psalms at Kohelet Shabbat services. We continue here sequentially with excerpts and commentary.

Psalm 22:   This is a somber study of the days of Israel’s exile and our yearning for ultimate redemption and connection with God.

My God, my God why have you forsaken me; why are you so far from saving me. I call out by day but there is no answer and at night there is no respite. In the past we have cried out and trusted you and we were answered. We know of your desire for our well-being and we will be secure with that knowledge. Be not aloof in my times of distress. Yet, the humble will eat and be satisfied and those who seek Hashem will praise Him and He will live in our hearts forever.

The future may be uncertain with periodic exile and we feel the agony as we have distanced ourselves from Hashem. We pray fervently and confidently for our future reunion knowing Your desire for our ultimate happiness.

JEWS IN DIFFERENT TIMES AND PLACES: Bracha Avigad's paintings
Caper plants like this one grow out of the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Illustration by Bracha Avigad appearing in the book Flowers of the Carmel, 1958.

The above illustration and so many others, particular of native Israeli wildflowers, was drawn by Bracha Avigad. Bracha’s family escaped Nazi Germany, where she had been evicted from her school for being Jewish. Shortly before they were able to arrange passage to Israel, young Bracha promised herself saw an exhibit of water-color flower paintings and promised herself “If I get to the Land of Israel, I’ll paint the flowers of the Land of Israel.”

For some seven decades, Bracha made good on her childhood promise, not only painting the flowers of the Land of Israel, but also playing a significant role in saving them from extinction.  More drawings and a lovely video interview of Bracha before she passed awayhttps://blog.nli.org.il/en/lbh-bracha-avigad/?_atscid=3_2269_206469845_10015577_0_Txtwewjaeashcwc8uwu&utm_source=activetrail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign= English Newsletter 28.01.2021
